Antonio Bryant

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Bad Dude or Bad Press?

Does Antonio Bryant have any cause for bitching about being franchise tagged and given a one-year, $9 million contract to play football in 2009?  Probably not, but he also seems like he could be somewhat misunderstood given all of the editorial that has been written about him.  One thing that is not up for debate is his talent level.  This kid can play the game, and play it at an extremely high level.  With the Browns in '05, he caught 69 passes for 1,009 yards, which were both career highs until last year when he caught 83 passes for 1,248 yards and seven TDs while trying to once again prove himself in this league after having sat on the couch for 2007.  If he can control his attitude and temper for another season, he should land that large multi-year multi-million dollar contract he covets before he turns 30.

Bryant is no angel.  Where there's smoke, there's usually fire, and trouble rarely finds guys who aren't acting like imbeciles.  Bryant is a hot-head, and has had run-ins with teammates and coaches on several occasions since entering the league.  The most well-known incident occurred during the '04 season when he threw his sweaty jersey at the face of Coach Bill Parcells in the locker-room.  Bryant was subsequently put on the next train out of the Lone-Star state headed straight for Cleveland.

Parcells isn't the only guy Bryant's had trouble with.  After he arrived in San Francisco, fresh off a successful 2005 season with the Browns, he repeatedly clashed with Coach Mike Nolan and multiple times was seen getting in animated arguments with the assistant coaches and QBs on the sidelines during games.  He wore #81 that season; sound familiar?

Besides that, Bryant has also gotten in trouble with the law. He has a DUI and failed a NFL drug test to his name, which was a primary factor as to why he sat on the couch in '07.

QB controversy

Antonio Bryant is also a football player (who knew?).  However, he has gotten the equivalent of the overweight waitress at Hooters for a QB way too many times in his career.  We'd be pretty upset too if we had to play with all these QBs:

Dallas: Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson and Vinny Testaverde.

Cleveland: Jeff Garcia, Kelly Holcomb, Luke McCown, Charlie Frye, and Trent Dilfer.

San Francisco: Alex Smith

Tampa Bay: Jeff Garcia and Brian Griese

So it comes as no surprise that with Garcia and Griese throwing him the ball (the best QBs he's ever played with), Bryant turned in a career year last year as he posted career highs in receptions (83), yards (1,248) and TDs (7).  Those seven TDs are a big number, considering Tampa Bay threw just 18 TD passes all year.

And for any fantasy owner that is concerned about making the playoffs and actually advancing, you might want to take a look at Bryant.  His fantasy playoff numbers in '08 were astounding (see below).  In his last five games of last year, he had 29 catches for 575 yards and five TDs, including a 200-yard game against the Panthers (week 14).

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Bryant can get it done in '09, but he's stuck again with questionable talent under center as his choices this season are either Byron Leftwich, Luke McCown, or rookie Josh Freeman.  Hmmm...  If Leftwich starts, he'll go down before the fantasy playoffs, but Bryant could put up some solid numbers along the way.  That one has sell high written all over it.  We have no faith whatsoever in McCown.

Bryant was franchise tagged as stated and has plenty of motivation to make do with what he's got.  He will be an unrestricted free-agent in 2010 and is auditioning for the biggie this year, but there is larger than normal risk associated with drafting this guy.  We are going to play it conservative with him relative to his '08 success and rank him as the 49th WR on our cheat sheet.

Contract

Bryant was franchised for 2009 and will earn $9.884 million because of it.  This is good news for Bryant owners this season:

2009 - $9.884 million

2010 - Free Agent

Green

We'll give him a green for this year, but only because its a contract year for him. He is a larger than normal risk to get suspended, but we think he can keep it together long enough to get that F-you money/contract he covets.

Breaking News

Bucs WR coach Richard Mann expected to leave the Bucs for the Beltway expand +

Bucs' WR coach Richard Mann will more than likely be moving on to greener pastures - likely to join Mike Shanahan in DC, and Rick Stroud of the Tampabay blog speculates that that could mean Bryant will follow suit.

Pyro's Take:

Apparently, the Bucs are displeased with Bryant's production. Well, gee, maybe they shouldn't run Jeff Garcia out of town leaving their QB prospects up to Byron Leftwich, Luke McCown, and rookie Josh Freeman. Bryant is more of a TO-like personality, so he won't ever last one place for too long. He'd be a nice addition in Washington, as they are light on talent at WR.

Antonio Bryant active expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) is active and starting as usual today.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant isn't worth a whole hell of a lot with a rookie QB running the team, but in a game that the Bucs are sure to be throwing quite a bit, go ahead and start him as a flex on your fantasy football team.

Antonio Bryant listed as probable for Week 11 expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) went through a third straight practice on Friday and is listed as probable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

It looks good for Bryant to play, but we wouldn't expect a full game's worth of work for him. You could maybe use him as a flex play for your fantasy football team this weekend.

Antonio Bryant returns to practice expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) returned to practice on Wednesday after missing the last two games.
"He came out there, ran around and looked as good as I've seen him," coach Raheem Morris said.

Pyro's Take:

It's far from definite that Bryant will play on Sunday as his surgically repaired knee could swell up at any time, but his practicing at all is a good sign. Whatever the case, he's hardly a WR3 or even a flex play for your fantasy football team right now.

Antonio Bryant doesn't make trip to Miami expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) did not make the trip to Miami and will be inactive for the game today.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant has had a setback with his knee and likely won't be healthy for the rest of the year. He wasn't of much use on your fantasy football team this year anyway.

Antonio Bryant doubtful for Sunday expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) was absent from practice again on Friday and is being listed as doubtful on the team's Week 10 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant's knee doesn't seem to be getting any better. He has become almost completely unreliable and should be permanently on your fantasy football bench.

Antonio Bryant still missing from practice expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) was held out of practice for a second consecutive day on Thursday to help bring down the swelling in his surgically repaired knee.

Pyro's Take:

Not good news for Bryant and his fantasy football owners for this weekend. Bryant did say that it hasn't gotten worse and he's just doing what he's told by the coaches, however. Check back to see if the Bucs try and get him to play on Sunday.

Antonio Bryant held out of practice Wednesday expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) was held out of practice on Wednesday to help ensure his being active this weekend against the Dolphins. WR Michael Clayton (wrist) also missed practice as a precaution.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant missed the debut of rookie QB Josh Freeman on Sunday, much to his dismay as he felt he could have played. Both Bryant and Clayton have upped their fantasy football value slightly with the play of the rookie QB, but really, just slightly enough for flex plays at best.

Bucs WR Antonio Bryant wanted to play expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) said that if it was his decision, he would have played in the game on Sunday, but that the team doctors and coaches overruled him.

Pyro's Take:

He also said it was his decision to sit out practice both Thursday and Friday, doing so because he figured his knee would make enough progress to play in the game. Obviously his plan did not work.
Check back throughout the week to see if you can get him into your fantasy football lineup next weekend or not.

Antonio Bryant out for game against the Pack expand +

According to FoxSports John Czarecki, Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) will not be active for the game against the Packers today.

Pyro's Take:

If Antonio was your WR3 today, hurry up and search your fantasy football bench for a replacement.

Antonio Bryant has swelling in knee again expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant is listed as questionable on the team's injury report after missing practice on Friday with swelling in his knee. Bryant blames the plane ride home from London and had this to say:
“That plane ride didn’t help me,” said Bryant. “I was good for like two weeks. I felt good and I had ran the best I had ran all season. Then I fell asleep on the plane ride and woke up and I was like, ‘Oh.’ It was fat. The swelling puts stress on the quad, which isn’t good, especially for my position where I’m running and cutting.”

Pyro's Take:

Bryant will be a game-time decision on Sunday, but it doesn't look good for him to be able to play. Even if he is given the green light, we'd suggest sitting him this week on your fantasy football bench with rookie Josh Freeman getting the call under center.

Antonio Bryant missing from early practice Friday expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) was sitting out the early portion of practice on Friday and his status for Sunday's game is unknown at this time.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant had a bit of a setback with his knee this past week, so we're unsure he'll make the start this weekend against the Packers. Check back Sunday morning if you have to play him on your fantasy football team this week, though it's not recommended you do so.

Antonio Bryant limited during Thursday practice expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) was limited in practice Thursday due to the same injury that has bothered him all season.

Pyro's Take:

Bryant will be catching passes from a fifth different QB in his last nine games this week. Time will tell, but our guess is that Bryant just lost a little more fantasy football value with the Bucs latest move to rookie Josh Freeman. Keep him on your bench for now and see how this all plays out.

Antonio Bryant active in London expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) is active for the game against the Patriots in London and will start alongside Michael Clayton as usual.

Pyro's Take:

Again, not the greatest play as a WR3 for your fantasy football team this week, but with six teams on bye, you could do worse.

Antonio Bryant active as expected expand +

Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) has been declared active for the game against the Panthers today.

Pyro's Take:

This was expected, as the coaches said earlier in the week that Bryant was looking as good as he has since before his knee scope. However, he doesn't look to be more than a low-end WR3 on your fantasy football team this week.
