Beanie came into the league with a chance to nab the starting job from Tim Hightower immediately, but didn’t. A pre-season ankle injury (he's used to injuries) put him behind the 8-ball to start, while fumbling problems (not new) and his inability to pick up the offense kept him at #2 on the depth chart throughout the season. He did, however, make an impression. The more the year went on, the more touches he saw, and the TDs started to pile up along with them. In time, it became obvious who the better runner was between the two, but because Arizona was the third highest passing offense and lowest rushing offense in the league (both in terms of attempts), Hightower continued to take on the higher percentage of plays. Wells still ended up just 11 fantasy points behind his backfield mate by the end of the season and did so while winning the Cardinal fanbase along the way.
