We're going to keep this one short and sweet:
"With his 6-foot-6, 265-pound frame, athletic ability and soft hands, Pettigrew would have a future in the NFL. His brutally physical blocking makes him a likely first-round draft choice. I've had tight ends that like to catch and not block, and ones that could block, but couldn't catch. But I've never had the combination like this. Whatever NFL team takes him is going to have them a special gem." - Oklahoma State OC Trooper Taylor
Pairing their rookie QB with a rookie pass-catcher that can protect his back or be a safety valve in the flat is a smart move- finally, some sound reasoning out of the Lions. His blocking abilities will be much appreciated by Stafford and Kevin Smith. That said, Pettigrew's numbers were not eye-popping in college, and we don't expect him to be much more than a backup fantasy TE this season. Only one TE had starter-worthy TE numbers in Linehan's offenses over the last seven seasons, and that was Jermaine Wiggins in 2004 (Vikings).
Just before training camp, Pettigrew signed a six-year (final year option), $14.6 million contract that had $9.369 million of it coming as a guarantee. The terms have yet to be disclosed:
2009 - Under Contract
2010 - Under Contract
2011 - Under Contract
2012 - Under Contract
2013 - Under Contract
2014 - Option Year
2015 - Free Agent
DETROIT LIONS
Rank #9 vs. Rush
Rank #16 vs. Pass

Brandon had a few nagging injuries throughout his college career, but nothing that would inhibit him going on into the pros.
The Lions second first-round pick in 2009, tight end Brandon Pettigrew, will have season-ending surgery on his left knee after suffering an injury in the game against the Packers on Thanksgiving day.
Pyro's Take:
Detroit just can't seem to hide from the bad news fairy. Pettigrew was really starting to come into his own lately, but because of this news, unless you are in a dynasty league, you can safely drop him from your fantasy football team.
Lions rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew injured his left knee in the game against the Packers on Thanksgiving and needed to go in for an MRI today to find out the extent of the damage. When asked about the injury today, coach Jim Schwartz had this to say:
"The only thing I know is that he swelled up, but not too bad, and we're getting an MRI. So we're just keeping our fingers crossed on that one... There's a chance that it might not be long term."
Pyro's Take:
Pettigrew has all the talent in the world, and was just beginning to show it too. We'll let you know how the results turn out as soon as they're released. For now, stick him at the end of your fantasy football bench.
Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew did not make a catch in his first game as a pro, and wasn't even targeted once while on the field.
"There were a few times looking back at the film that we probably should have got him the ball," coach Jim Schwartz said. "We were trying to push the ball deeper down the field, and all of our tight ends were a little bit more open underneath... But some of that again goes to being down and trying to catch back up in the game, and it's hard to be patient and take 5-yard gains when you need three scores in the fourth quarter."
Pyro's Take:
Maybe if you took those 5-yarders earlier in the game and controlled the clock a little more, Brees and company wouldn't have gone off to the tune of 45 points on ya buddy. Look for Pettigrew to be more involved in Week 2.
Even though he missed most of camp with a thigh injury, Detroit Lions rookie TE Brandon Pettigrew still looks like he will be the starter in Week 1.
Pyro's Take:
This isn't a surprise as Pettigrew has the most talent and upside of any other TE on the Lions roster. He's a great blocker to run behind and will be a huge target for rookie QB Matthew Stafford to dump off to when in trouble. His potential alone makes him a fringe backup fantasy TE this year.
Detroit Lions rookie TE Brandon Pettigrew went through a physical practice on Wednesday and came out the other side feeling fine. Pettigrew had been dealing with a thigh injury for most of camp, but has since recovered enough to take part in full-contact practices.
Pyro's Take:
It's looking more and more like the Lions will be starting the big rookie TE, as Pettigrew has the most skills of any TE on the roster and maybe the best skill-set the Lions have ever seen at the position. If the Lions other first-round pick, QB Matthew Stafford, ends up starting, expect Pettigrew to be a happy man as rookie QBs tend to lean on their TEs heavily during their rookie seasons. Despite Brandon never having played a down in the NFL, we still like him as a low-end backup fantasy TE this year with the possibility of high ROI towards the middle of the season.
Detroit Lions second first-round pick, TE Brandon Pettigrew, returned to practice on a limited basis Monday after dealing with a thigh injury for most of camp.
Pyro's Take:
Pettigrew has a chance to play in Saturday's preseason matchup against the Colts if he shows he can withstand a weeks worth of practice. Brandon has tremendous upside and could turn out to be a good backup fantasy TE this season. If rookie QB Matthew Stafford ends up starting, Pettigrew could turn out to be his outlet valve as rookie QBs tend to lean on their TEs more than veterans.
The 20th overall pick in this year's draft, TE Brandon Pettigrew, became the last draft pick to sign with the Lions on July 31, signing a five-year, $14.6 million contract.
Pyro's Take:
Pettigrew is expected to contribute immediately to a team in need of a TE. He should have a solid rookie year, but nothing to write home about.
