Brian Westbrook

Philadelphia Eagles

I Feel a Need...

Westy has been a lot for opposing fantasy teams to deal with over the last three seasons.  He’ll kill you on the ground, in the air, and especially after the catch.  He has been this way for his entire pro and college career.  He holds the NCAA record with 9,512 all-purpose yards, amassing a 6.2 yards per carry with 84 touchdowns, and is the first player in the history of college football to have 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in one season.   Over his last three pro seasons, Westy has produced more total yards than every RB in the league except perennial 1st overall fantasy pick, Ladainian Thomlinson:

lt vs. westbrook

Over the last three seasons, the Eagles without Westbrook is like John Rambo without his serrated weapon of choice:

westbrook and rambo

Westbrook is the Eagles leading rusher AND receiver the past three years!

Rambo was able to draw “4th Blood” in 2008, will Westy be able to do the same in 2009?

Theoretically Speaking

There are a lot of “theories” that are referenced throughout the fantasy football lexicon.  Most of these are conjured up on a whim as everyone in this hobby thinks they are an expert….including us!  The 30 year old RB theory actually happens to have some validity.  The RB position is among the most brutal in all of sports.   When and whether a RB hits this wall has as much to do with the amount of mileage he has on his legs, as it does with what happens to him physiologically when he turns 30.  Some hit the wall sooner, say  if they leave college early or come into a full load right away, others enjoy a nice steady career and then – WHAM –Mother Nature takes over.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

The Eagles have upgraded their offense over the past two seasons.   Gone are the days of depending on Reggie Brown, James Thrash, Greg Lewis, and Todd “Sphincter” for balance.  The addition of DeSean Jackson last year and Jeremy Maclin in the ’09 NFL draft should all help to deflect attention away from Westbrook.    They also have Kevin Curtis back healthy after successful groin surgery.

Despite missing two games (ribs and ankle) and spending the entire year on the injury list in some way or form, Westy enjoyed a stellar ’08 fantasy season registering 1338 combined air and ground yards along with 14 total TDs.  The one thing to pull from 2008 season, though, was that his touches dropped significantly from 2007.  In one less game in 2008, he received 81 fewer touches.

Westy will be 30 by the time he takes his first carry in ’09 and is coming off of minor ankle surgery (performed in early June 2009).  Head coach Andy Reid and Co. will be mindful of this and could limit his touches in the first month of the season.   It’s time to hedge against Father Time, we advise waiting a bit on ol’ Westy this season and make him the 59th RB off of the board later this summer.

Handcuff

The Eagles decided to draft U of Pitt RB LeSean McCoy in the 2nd round instead of depending on Lorenzo Booker for the sole backup duties.  This should actually be a nice battle to keep an eye on as Westbrook will be 30 this year and has never played 16 games in a season his entire career.  Look for the rookie McCoy to win this battle as he has great hands and would fit into the Eagles offensive scheme really nicely should something happen to Westy.

Contract

Westy was inked to an extension before the ’08 season and is technically under contract with the Eagles until 2012 season, with the 2012 and 2013 seasons being voidable.  The deal included $13 million guaranteed, with another $3 million available through playoff appearances and performance incentives.  Here’s how the rest of it shakes out:

2009 - $4 million

2010 - $1 million

2011 - $2.2 million

2012 - $3.4 million (voidable)

2013 - $4.6 million (voidable)

2014 - Free Agent

He always seems to miss a couple, and spends a great deal of time on the injury list, but at the end of the day, he has been very good at playing through pain, and has had no one career threatening injury.

Breaking News

Eagles release former All-Pro Brian Westbrook expand +

The Philadelphia Eagles decided to cut ties with former All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook and released him on Tuesday. Westbrook played his entire eight-year career with the Eagles and leaves the franchise ranking 1st in yards from scrimmage (9,785), 2nd in rushing yards (5,995), 3rd in rushing TDs (37), 3rd in receptions (426), 10th in receiving yards (3,790), and 10th in receiving TDs (29).

Pyro's Take:

Westy still has a ton of talent and can probably still produce at the NFL level, it just won't be for the Eagles. His injury woes are too concerning for the team's management at this point, so LeSean McCoy will get the chance in 2010 to take over for Westbrook as the starting RB of the future.
The 30-year old running back has already stated that he will not be retiring, so we'll see where the multi-talented RB shows up soon enough.

Westy retiring? expand +

Philly radio host Howard Eskin reported this weekend that Brian Westbrook may retire this offseason and not because of the multiple concussion problem. It's his left knee - something that has nagged him for the last couple seasons.

Pyro's Take:

He is due a hefty chunk 'o change next year - $7.5 million duckets to be exact. So I don't see him suiting up as a Eagle without a sizable pay cut. Depending on exactly how bad the knee is, I still think his receiving ability out of the backfield could add value to any team short on that talent - like the Patriots, Bears, Bengals, Redskins, Lions, Packers, and even the Colts.

Westy apparently not a good luck charm for the Eagles in '09 expand +

The Eagles were 7-1 in games Brian Westbrook did not play in and 4-5 in games he did play in.

Pyro's Take:

Coincidence? Nah. These numbers used to be reversed. I'm not willing to say that they went 7-1 just cuz he was on the bench, but the 4-5 line is what one needs to focus on, and you can bet your ass that the Eagles' brass is with a 7+ million bill for his contract in 2010. Expect Westy to accept a pay-cut or move on.

Westbrook comes through game just fine expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook came through the Week 16 victory over the Broncos with no post-concussion symptoms after taking part in about 25 plays.
"He said he felt fine," coach Andy Reid said. "He doesn't lie to me."

Pyro's Take:

We'd expect about the same next week and possibly through the playoffs as the Eagles have been winning with and without Westy. If you have your fantasy Super Bowl next weekend, he's still not the greatest of plays for you.

Westbrook passes concussion test expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook passed his concussion test with flying colors and will get some reps with the first team in practice this week as he prepares for his first game action since Week 10.

Pyro's Take:

It looks like Westy will be suited up for this weekend's game, but his playing time will definitely be limited. If you have to use him on your fantasy team this Sunday, don't expect more than fringe flex numbers.

Westbrook will be limited if he plays expand +

Eagles coach Andy Reid said yesterday that if running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) gives it a go on Sunday, he would not play the whole game.
"I think he'll be pretty fresh. He'll have fresh legs out there. Obviously he's not going to play the whole game. [We will] make sure we keep track of how many plays he plays, if it comes down to that," said Reid.

Pyro's Take:

We're still unsure of whether or not Westy will get in there this weekend, but if he does, you won't be able to use him on your fantasy team anyway due to his limited play. LeSean McCoy will also end up with less value due to his return.

Westbrook will return to practice Wednesday expand +

Eagles coach Andy Reid said on Monday that running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) will return to the practice field on Wednesday and that he expects the doctors to clear him for game action at some point this week.
"We'll know more here by tomorrow, but right now it looks pretty good," Reid said about Westbrook.

Pyro's Take:

Westy has been doing everything he can to come back from his second concussion of the season, and it looks like it might be about that time where he suits up again. However, even if he plays in Week 16, there's no way you could depend on him for your fantasy team as he'd likely be extremely limited in his touches.

Westbrook officially out for Sunday's game expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) was ruled out for the game against the 49ers this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Westy must not have been given the green light from doctors yet. We can't see a situation where he would help your fantasy team at this point, so feel free to drop him if there is anyone else out there worth grabbing.

Westbrook still limited with scout team expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) was still being limited to working with the scout team on Wednesday, while coach Andy Reid also said that his neurological tests weren't quite where they need to be for the team to activate him, so the likelihood of Westbrook playing on Sunday is close to nil.

Pyro's Take:

Again, we'd be surprised if Westy makes it back before Week 17, which renders him basically useless in the playoffs for your fantasy team this year.

Eagles not planning on Westbrook for Week 15 expand +

According to coach Andy Reid, the Eagles don't expect running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) to be back this week, so they will be game-planning as if he will not be in the lineup.

Pyro's Take:

It looks like Westy will be practicing with the scout team all week, so we're not expecting him to be back either. If he's worth anything for the rest of this fantasy football year, it will have to be in Week 16, which is likely your Super Bowl week.

Westbrook should return to lineup in Week 15 expand +

The Eagles have confirmed that running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) will return to the starting lineup in Week 15 barring a medical setback during this week of practice.

Pyro's Take:

Westy has played just one game since suffering his first concussion in Week 7. If he returns this next week, he will be playing with a new helmet that supposedly uses the same shock-absorbing technology used to protect Army paratroopers and Navy SEALS.
Hopefully his return makes a difference for fantasy owners who kept him around for the past eight weeks.

Westbrook out for Sunday's game expand +

Even though he returned to practice this week, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) has been ruled out for the game against the Giants this Sunday night.

Pyro's Take:

No surprise here. At this point, it would be a bonus for both the Eagles and your fantasy football team if Westy gets back to game action anytime before the last week of the season.

Westbrook at practice again on Thursday expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) was at practice again on Thursday, although it is unknown if he was working with the starters or the scout team.

Pyro's Take:

We're still under the impression that Westy won't be playing this week, but he might have a chance in Week 15. Keep him on your bench this week regardless.

Westbrook returns to limited practice today expand +

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) returned to practice in a limited fashion with the scout team on Wednesday. Coach Andy Reid said that Westbrook will be eased back into action and that he hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants just yet.

Pyro's Take:

We still don't expect Westy to be playing this week, and next week is highly questionable as well. Keep him on your fantasy football bench and hope he can get back soon enough to help you out in your fantasy playoffs the next few weeks.

Westbrook "really scared" about future in NFL expand +

In the first time he spoke with the media since suffering his second concussion, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook exclaimed just how scared he is about his future not only in the NFL, but in years down the line after he retires from football.
"That's my biggest concern. How am I going to be when I'm 50 or when I'm 60? Will I have all these brain diseases and will I have a problem remembering things? ...Now, the most important thing is to get 100 percent healthy - and not play football... until I'm 100 percent healthy."

Pyro's Take:

With all that has been in the papers and on-line about concussions lately, you can't blame Westy, or any football player for being scared. The sheer size of players nowadays and the force with which they hit you can cause permanent damage on any single play.
We'd be surprised if Westy makes it back to form this year, but just in case, keep him on the end of your fantasy football bench.
