DeAngelo Williams

Carolina Panthers

2009 Review

RBBC - tandem in carolina

Carolina played one of the toughest schedules against the run last year, but DeAngelo Williams still bucked the odds and came out of 2009 with fantasy starter-worthy numbers.  And if that wasn’t enough, he also did it despite getting 20+ carries in a game only three times the whole year… PLUS he only played 13 games and was injured in the first quarter of a fourth!  That's more amazing than the fact that Lindsey Lohan gets so much attention for doing nothing. So basically, the smaller, quicker half of “Double Trouble” proved that his 2008 season was no fluke, but because he got injured later on in the season, his durability has now been brought into question.  Whatever the case, when he plays, DeAngelo is a thing of beauty to watch and rarely disappoints.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

The only problem with DeAngelo Williams is that he will have to battle the (almost) equally talented Jonathan Stewart for carries again in 2010, and will do so happily.  The Panthers front office and coaching staff have already determined that they will proceed with the offensive game plan that has been working for them, which means they will continue running a full-out RBBC… and DeAngelo 100% welcomes it.  “We’re each about 220 or 230 carries a year,’’ Williams said. “I’d rather have that than 300-plus carries a year. That wears on your legs and you’re not going to last long doing that. With me and Jonathan back there and sharing it the way we do, that’s a real treat and neither one of us is going to get worn out.’’ (Source: ESPN.com)  This would normally be a situation to stay away from in your draft, but if Williams can stay healthy this year, there’s no question he’s still an RB1 for your fantasy team in 2010.

~ The emergence of Jonathan Stewart could take even MORE carries away from DeAngelo

~ With Williams being more on the smallish side, the injuries could start to pile up and affect his running style

~ The switch to Matt Moore, or whoever lines up behind center, has the possibility of affecting the Panthers running game.  Which way is yet to be determined

Contract

DeAngelo signed a five-year, $14.5 million contract back in 2006.  The deal included $5 million guaranteed with another $3 million available through incentives.  The final year plays out as follows:

2010 - $725,000

2011 - Free Agent

DeAngelo is playing for a new contract, so he should be in line for a big season despite his timeshare situation with Jonathan Stewart

Breaking News

DeAngelo Williams inactive today expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams has been declared inactive for the game against the Saints today.

Pyro's Take:

Williams just barely got over 200 carries this year after going for 273 the year before. When he was in there, he was a RB1 for your fantasy team, but he didn't come near the production of the 2008 season. He'll be a first-round pick again next year, especially with Carolina likely to have an easier schedule.

DeAngelo Williams inactive on Sunday expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams has been declared inactive for todays game against the Giants.

Pyro's Take:

Jonathan Stewart becomes a great RB2 play for your fantasy team with this news, so make sure you get him in your lineup.

No update on DeAngelo's injury expand +

Coach John Fox and the Panthers did not offer any new news Monday morning on the left ankle injury suffered by running back DeAngelo Williams.

Pyro's Take:

Williams left Sunday's game late in the first quarter with the injury and did not return. Jonathan Stewart took full advantage of the opportunity rushing for 109 yards with 2 TDs, one rushing and one receiving. The 100-yard game was the first the Vikings had given up since the Packers Ryan Grant ran for 119 yards back on November 11th, 2007, 38 games ago.

DeAngelo listed as probable for Sunday expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) practiced again on Friday and is expected to start this weekend against the Patriots.

Pyro's Take:

Williams will be a middle-of-the-road RB1 for your fantasy team this week as he goes up against a pretty tough rush D in New England. His ankle seems to be fine, though, so don't even think about taking him out of your lineup.

DeAngelo practices in full again expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) participated fully in practice once again on Thursday and will start against the Patriots.

Pyro's Take:

With Matt Moore expected to be under center again in Week 14, look for DeAngelo to get a ton of work out of the backfield this weekend. He can be put back into your fantasy football lineup as a RB1 again.

DeAngelo back at practice Wednesday expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) came back to a full practice on Wednesday and looks to be in line for his normal start in Week 14.

Pyro's Take:

We can't blame Carolina for giving their star RB a week off against a team they knew they could beat without him, though it did screw over some fantasy football owners out there. Get him back in your starting lineup immediately.

DeAngelo Williams inactive for Bucs game expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) has been declared inactive for the game against the Buccaneers today. Jonathan Stewart will get the start.

Pyro's Take:

Fantasy football owners were hoping Williams would push through this one and give it a go, as the Bucs gave him one of his best fantasy outputs earlier in the season. Stewart can be used as a high-end RB2 on your team today.

DeAngelo misses full week of practice expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) missed his third straight practice today and is being listed as questionable on the team's Week 13 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

This has got to be making fantasy football owners nervous, but our guess is that De still plays on Sunday. You must check back with us Sunday morning, however, as a last second change to your lineup might be necessary.

Williams misses practice, but expected to play expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle) missed practice for a second straight day on Thursday, but coach John Fox said that he hopes he will be back on the field tomorrow and expects him to play against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

The injury he suffered last weekend looked a lot worse than it actually was, so the rest he's getting right now is more precautionary than anything else. He'll be a nice RB1 for your fantasy football team this week, but you might want to check back with us just to make sure he's a go against the Bucs.

DeAngelo rests his ankle on Wednesday expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams took a seat on the sidelines during practice on Wednesday in order to rest the ankle he sprained last week against the Jets. He is still expected to start this Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

DeAngelo should be fine to play against the Bucs this weekend, and might be the best RB1 in fantasy football when all is said and done in Week 13.

DeAngelo sprains his ankle in loss expand +

According to Panthers coach John Fox, running back DeAngelo Williams sprained his ankle in the loss to the Jets on Sunday. Williams came out briefly during the game, but returned shortly afterward.

Pyro's Take:

DeAngelo will likely be given the Jonathan Stewart treatment and sit out practice most of the week. He's unlikely to miss any game-time, though, and will be his usual RB1 for your fantasy football team next weekend.

DeAngelo expected to play tonight expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (knee) is fully expected to play tonight despite his questionable billing on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

DeAngelo seems to be just fine according to coach John Fox and should be in starting fantasy football lineups tonight against the Dolphins.

DeAngelo misses practice on Wednesday expand +

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (knee) missed practice on Wednesday and is being listed as questionable on the injury report for the game against the Dolphins on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Coach John Fox said that Williams was just resting on Wednesday and that he expects him to be able to play Thursday, but check back tomorrow just in case you have to get him out of your fantasy football lineup at the last minute.

UPDATE: DeAngelo active expand +

The official word has Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams active and starting as usual.

Pyro's Take:

So we gave you close to seven minutes extra to set your lineup... Make sure you start De as his match-up looks to be extremely favorable.

DeAngelo will play Sunday expand +

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (knee) will "definitely" be playing on Sunday against the Falcons.

Pyro's Take:

The official active and inactive players will be announced within the next half hour, but we thought we'd give you that little bit extra time to set your fantasy football lineup.
