Joseph Addai

Indianapolis Colts

Wear and Terror

Ever eaten a rice cake?  That’s Addai’s game.  Ok, so he’s fast; that’s about where the pluses end.  He cannot break tackles, his solution for every play is to bounce it to the outside, and his field vision is sub-par.  His rushing average has dipped over a ½-yard in each of his first three seasons.  Addai never carried a full load in college, so we remain mystified as to why Indy spent a first rounder on him.  He was stuffed as much as any back in the league in ‘08… on split carries!  He was stopped for negative or zero yards 18 times on 155 carries, and to put this in perspective, in ’08, Thomas Jones had 290 carries and was only stuffed 15 times.  As a final nail in the coffin, Addai plays his worst football in December – that’s right, during the fantasy football playoffs.  Check it:

joseph addai - monthy breakdown

He plays on a great team with the second best QB in the game and a strong offensive line.  Those are the only reasons he managed the stellar numbers he did in ’07.  It doesn’t take much to punch the ball in from the one yard line with Peyton manning under center.

Split Personality

If you don’t know what RBBC stands for, call us when the shuttle lands… and when it does, we’re still not explaining it to you.

Dungy realized Addai’s lack of endurance and brought Dominic Rhodes back for ‘08.  The load was split down the middle and Addai ended ’08 as one of the bigger busts on recent record.

The Colts finished 30th in rushing attempts, 31st in rushing yards, and tied for 19th in rushing TDs in 2008.  Addai’s ineptitude certainly played a large part in these numbers, but the offensive line deserves a share of the blame, too, as they blocked their team to a dead last 3.4 YPC average.  The Indy schedule was brutal in ’08 as they faced the angry AFC North (Pittsburgh and Baltimore), but they swap those guys out this season for the porous NFC West, so it’s a slight improvement.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Tony Dungy has retired, and assistant head coach, Jim Caldwell, is now running the show... on paper at least.  Manning is the real play caller on that team, so don’t expect any extreme scheme shifts.  The Colts like to pass the ball.  Dominic Rhodes signed on with the Buffalo Bills, but he is basically a poor man’s Addai.  The Colts spent a 1st round draft pick on UConn’s Donald Brown, a compact, yet shifty in-between the tackles type runner who can handle full time duties (367 carries for 2,083 yards and 21 TDs in college last season).  This effectively keeps Addai in an RBBC, but he should continue to receive most of the goal-line carries as long as he remains effective in that area.  The Colts have a somewhat easier go of it schedule-wise as they face the weak NFC West (SF, AZ, Sea, STL) this season; but they still clock in with a tough run schedule per our Strength of Schedule.  Though Addai’s fantasy value is at an all-time low, he is basically playing this and next season for his next big contract and has plenty to prove.  The RBBC will continue to keep his value down, but perhaps he can produce a decent ROI given his awful 2008 numbers.  Make Addai the 9th RB off of draft boards this summer.

contract

He signed a five-year contract in ‘06, so he will be motivated to at least try to start piling up stats this season.  The Colts best play here is to ride him out for this and next season and just let this burglar of turds go sign elsewhere.  They can grab RBs in the 3rd and 4th round of most any draft as talented as Addai, but this contract situation can only help Addai owners in ‘09.  The remaining years are listed below:

2009 - $713,000

2010 - $1.314 million

2011 - Free Agent

handcuff

We are ranking rookie Donald Brown ahead of Addai, but by only a couple of slots.  If you are drafting on either of the turns, you may just want to blow both picks to seal up this backfield.  We didn’t rank either as being starter worthy, but each remain as quality backups to your starters.  If one goes down, the other could produce some stellar ROI.

Breaking News

Colts coach still vague on Week 16 playing time expand +

When addressing the media during his Monday press conference, Colts coach Jim Caldwell was still indeterminate as to whether his star players would play the whole game, a few series, or even at all against the Jets next Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

He also said that playing time would be determined by a player's health, but that could mean anything at this point as Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon, and Joseph Addai have all dealt with various nagging injuries throughout the past bunch of weeks.
We'll keep you posted on with any and all updates coming through as we know many fantasy football seasons depend on some of these Colts players.

Addai ready to take on Jaguars tonight expand +

The Colts listed Peyton Manning (glute), Reggie Wayne (foot), Pierre Garcon (knee), and Joseph Addai (knee) as probable on their Week 15 injury report and all are expected to start as usual Thursday night.
Donald Brown, however, is still out with a chest injury.

Pyro's Take:

This was expected, though how long they end up playing is the real question. If the Colts manage to get a big lead against the Jaguars tonight, expect the starters to be pulled for the 4th quarter so as not to risk injury. Our guess is that it won't be a blowout, so it's safe to use all these guys on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Addai going solo with Brown out expand +

Colts rookie running back Donald Brown (shoulder) is inactive for the game against the Texans today.

Pyro's Take:

We guess he had a setback either Thursday or Friday, as it seemed early in the week like he was going to give it a go today. If you had him in your fantasy football lineup, make sure to get him out now. And if you happen to have Joseph Addai, he should make for a fine RB2 start today getting the bulk of the carries.

Addai going solo or back in rotation Sunday? expand +

Colts rookie running back Donald Brown (shoulder) missed Friday's practice after going through full practices both Wednesday and Thursday. He is being listed as questionable on the Week 9 injury report because of it.

Pyro's Take:

This affects Joseph Addai fantasy football owners as much as Brown owners as neither is worth more than a flex option if they both play, but Addai would be bumped up the scale if Brown can't make a go of it. Check back Sunday morning to see how this turns out.

Randy given bye week off, but will start Week 9 expand +

Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss returned to practice on Tuesday after being given the entire bye week off to rest. He is expected to start in Week 9 against the Dolphins.

Pyro's Take:

Randy is starting to pull it together, as is the rest of the Pats offense. We expect him to end up as a top-5 fantasy football wideout this year, so make sure you keep him in your lineup from here on out.

Addai to get full load with Brown out expand +

Colts rookie running back Donald Brown (shoulder) has been declared inactive for the game against the 49ers today.

Pyro's Take:

Joseph Addai will take on a full load with Brown out, so if you have him on your fantasy football team, you might want to think about getting him in there.

Addai active for match-up against Titans expand +

Colts running back Joseph Addai (hand) has been declared active for the game tonight after being questionable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Addai is splitting carries pretty evenly with Donald Brown, so the best he could be is a flex play for your fantasy football team at this point.

Addai questionable for Week 5 expand +

Colts running back Joseph Addai (hand) is listed as questionable on the injury report for this weekend's game against the Titans despite the fact that he practiced in full on Friday.

Pyro's Take:

Addai is fine and will play, but you can finally expect a slightly larger role for Donald Brown as long as the team has a legit excuse to use him now. If your fantasy football league has you starting a rookie, Brown would be a good play for you on Sunday.

Addai, Brown's touches starting to even out expand +

The Indianapolis Colts are starting to spread the ball around a bit more with their running backs Joseph Addai and Donald Brown. In the first game, Addai had 22 touches to Brown's 13, while in the second game, it was much more even with Addai getting seven touches to Brown's five.

Pyro's Take:

Both backs also have a touchdown apiece in what is turning out to be an even-split RBBC in Indy. Neither RB has left the other in his wake, though Brown looks to be a touch quicker than Addai thus far. Neither is playable on your fantasy team just yet.

Colts tandem of Addai, Brown play sparingly expand +

The Indianapolis Colts backfield tandem of Joseph Addai and rookie Donald Brown barely played last night as Addai only rushed twice for 11 yards while Brown rushed three times for five yards. Each player also added a reception.

Pyro's Take:

Addai and Brown will be running as a RBBC this year, with Addai getting the slightly larger load. Make sure you handcuff these two to each other in your upcoming draft.

Colts backfield still a mystery expand +

The big question surrounding the Indianapolis Colts this preseason is which #1 pick will get the ball more, Joseph Addai or Donald Brown? "It depends, week to week, it depends on who you're facing, what type of defensive structure you have to deal with," coach Jim Caldwell said. "So our strategy changes on that a bit, but one thing we do know for sure is there will be some kind of rotation."

Pyro's Take:

Both Addai and Brown are good enough to deserve whatever touches they get, which makes this a real tough situation to dive into from a fantasy perspective. Addai will probably end up with a few more touches than Brown in the end, but this is a purely working RBBC here, so if you draft one of these guys to your team, you'd better be ready to back him up with the other one the next round.

Colts' Addai is looking much better this training camp expand +

The Colts' 31st ranked rushing offense in '08 figures to get a boost this season now that RB Joseph Addai, C Jeff Saturday, and G Ryan Lilja are now healthy. According to Tom James of the Terre-Haute Tribune-Star, Addai more closely resembles the way he looked in his rookie year, vs. the hobbled version we got last year.

Pyro's Take:

Addai is not an every-down RB, and not a very prolific part-time guy. That said, with Manning at QB, he will have red-zone opportunities, which is the only thing that keeps his value as a high backup or fringe starter (in 12 man leagues). He will split the load this season with rookie Donald Brown.

Joseph Addai's job safe expand +

The Indianapolis Star Tribune reports that Addai is the clear cut No. 1 running back on the Colts. "Make no mistake, Addai is the starter."

Pyro's Take:

Addai only played in 12 games last year, registering career lows in rushing attempts, yards and TDs, but this is good news after the Colts said in July they haven't been "fully satisfied" with Addai's production. Rookie Donald Brown will take touches away from Addai, and Addai won't get the carries Edge got while he was in town, but he's the starter and will put up respectable numbers.
