Gordon Out Week 15

Pyro's take: Melvin Gordon is considered "week to week" due to the combination of his knee and hip injuries. It is not certain whether Gordon will return for the 2016 season.

Fantasy Goo: Farrow received the workload in place of Gordon, but note that Hillman was inactive last week. He has since been activated and will share some of the workload.

Could Veteran Utility Player Dexter McCluster Be A Viable Replacement For Danny Woodhead? The Chargers Think So

The San Diego Chargers

Pyro's take: The San Diego Chargers are "expected" to sign free agent RB Dexter McCluster.

Fantasy Goo: The Chargers will likely replace Danny Woodhead, who was lost for the season this week, with all-purpose running back Dexter McCluster. McCluster could fill the role in San Diego's passing game that Woodhead left behind and quickly garner fantasy value. He would serve well as a third down pass catching specialist to pair up with second year back Melvin Gordon who should garner early down and goaline work. If signed, McCluster should be considered a must-add on the fantasy bench for upside purposes alone.

Danny's Done, Go for Gordon

Pyro's take: Danny Woodhead suffered a season-ending ACL tear Sunday versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, per NFL.com.

Fantasy goo: This is a pretty devastating blow for Woodhead owners, as he's been a PPR machine since he arrived in San Diego. However, Melvin Gordon received his largest workload as a Charger with 24 carries Sunday and Rivers didn't seem to miss a beat. It's probably a week too late to grab him, but Gordon may be set for a tremendous workload this season.

Short sample size or not, the lone drive by the Bolts’ first team offense went as well as the team could have hoped, as the seven-play drive culminated with a 44-yard touchdown catch and run by Melvin Gordon to take a 7-3 lead.

Pyro's take: Short sample size or not, the lone drive by the Bolts’ first team offense went as well as the team could have hoped, as the seven-play drive culminated with a 44-yard touchdown catch and run by Melvin Gordon to take a 7-3 lead. Gordon did not have a touchdown over his rookie year, and also rushed the ball three times for 12 yards (4.0 yards per carry).

Fantasy Goo: While Gordon was at Wisconsin I thought for a guy who busted out so many 20 yard runs, why was he getting caught from behind so often before he could make it to the end zone. Last year Gordon ran for 3.5 yards per carry. He will need to get to that magical 4.0 YPC to start soothing Charger coaches and the owner’s nerves in 2016. I am far from convinced in Gordon for 2016 but, I will not give up on him yet. The Chargers typically are a high octane passing team which could soften run defense for Melvin to begin claiming the starting spot for good. The jolt in this bolt of lightning is that he is quietly going in the 6th round of 12 team mock drafts as the 27th RB taken. San Diego is desperate to finally find a workhorse RB and will give Melvin a lot of rope.

Chargers Expect Melvin Gordon To Be 100% For Training Camp

San Diego Chargers

Pyro's take: San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) is expected to be "100 percent healthy" for the team's training camp that begins on July 29. (Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union Tribune)

Fantasy Goo: Melvin Gordon is entering his second NFL season and is coming off of a disappointing rookie campaign. Gordon appeared in 14 games in 2015 with the Chargers and finished the year with only 833 total yards, zero touchdowns, and four lost fumbles. Gordon is expected to lead San Diego's backfield once again but don't be surprised if he is replaced by Danny Woodhead or Brandon Oliver if he was to struggle early on in the season.

Melvin Gordon Expected To Have A Productive Sophomore Season

According to

Pyro's take: According to Eric Williams of ESPN, the hope and expectation is that sophomore running back Melvin Gordon has a similar year for the San Diego Chargers to the one Ryan Mathews had with them back in 2013.

Fantasy Goo: During that season, Mathews ran for a career-best 1,255 yards and six touchdowns under the tutelage of Ken Whisenhunt, who is now back with the team as offensive coordinator. The coaching staff has done and said all the right things in regards to making sure Gordon sees more opportunities and schemes that fit his running style. He is a quality post-hype RB2 option and could be a nice addition to your fantasy roster at the right draft price. He is currently the 27th RB in MFL10'S rankings going in the 8th round.

Melvin Gordon Participating In Drills Despite Being Less Than 100%

With many worried

Pyro's take: With many worried about the long-term health of running back Melvin Gordon, it has been slightly promising that he has been able to participate in some individual and team drills during the recent voluntary OTA's. However, according to Tom Krasovich from the U-T San Diego "Gordon isn't scheduled to be at 100 percent at this stage of the offseason. And, he's not."

If Gordon can make a full recovery by the start of training camp it will be a big breath of fresh air for fantasy owners. However, it remains to be seen just how much of the workload he will be given due to his rookie struggles and ball security issues. With that being said he should be able to earn the early-down work to begin the season, but he will have to earn some red zone touches to increase his fantasy value heading into his second season.

RB Melvin Gordon participating in OTA's

San Diego Chargers

Pyro's take: San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon was spotted participating in individual drills at the start of OTAs.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune went on to say that Gordon has progressed well since undergoing microfracture surgery. All signs point to Gordon being ready for the start of training camp. With the support of the coaching staff behind him, Gordon should have no problem improving on his mediocre rookie season numbers as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks during his recovery.

Melvin Gordon admits he was terrible in his rookie season

Pyro's take: “It was terrible. I was terrible.”

He carried the ball 184 times for 641 yards, averaging 3.5 yards per carry without a touchdown before his season came to a close in Week 14 after sustaining a knee injury.

Not all the blame can rest on his shoulders as the offensive line was garbage last season. Gordon still has his confidence, and if the Chargers can retool that line, he can be in a good place to rebound from last season.

A standard league guy only however as he is not known for catching passes.

Melvin Gordon (knee cartilage surgery) suggested he'll be back to 100 percent in two months.

Pyro's take: Melvin Gordon, a visitor to the Bay Area for this week's Super Bowl festivities, said he's pleased with his comeback from knee-cartilage surgery in early January.

Melvin Gordon may not be the right fit for the Chargers

Pyro's take: It has been an ugly season for the Chargers and Melvin Gordon. He’s shown some signs of life with a 4.4 YPC over the last two games, but has fumbled often in his rookie season.

One breakaway run and one touchdown. You deserve it. You’re a good a player, tough to bring down, stubborn as heck. You’ve made your mistakes, you have much to learn. Few inside the organization believe it will come together for you this season. You’ve lost so much confidence. It would be great to see you have at least one moment – to be able to really know you can do it.--Kevin Acee

Melvin Gordon rushed 11 times for 31 yards and caught 3-of-3 targets for 25 yards

Pyro's take: Typical numbers for Melvin Gordon as he just cant seem to get anything going, and the offensive line is of no use.

Gordon has failed to score a touchdown this season, and it appears as it will be Danny Woodhead getting most the looks and touches.

Gordon should only be owned in Dynasty/keeper leagues.

Melvin Gordon (ankle) is practicing in full for Week 8.

Pyro's take: Melvin Gordon will be ready to play, its his workload that is more concerning. Danny Woodhead has been getting the ball down near the goal line and is the Chargers passing down back.

He also now must contend with Branden Oliver, the running back situation in San Diego is a full blown RBBBC now.

I would only start him in a desperate situation.

A scratch for Week 7

Pyro's take: Gordon will NOT play. Too bad, he had a great matchup, I had him as a buy low break out player today to. Woodhead gets a notch up, and Oliver becomes viable.

Melvin Gordon (ankle) says he'll be "good to play"

Pyro's take: The Chargers running back was one of nine players who did not participate Wednesday, as he eases back from an ankle injury.

Gordon said he'll be "good to play" this Sunday against the Raiders.

He realizes his fumbles are an issue as he did twice against Green Bay, and didnt see the field in the second half.

"We're going to do some drills, I'm sure, when I get back. Coach (Ollie Wilson) will have me doing some drills. But really, keeping the ball up, that's just mental focus. Coach has said you can't play as a back, here or anywhere, if you're putting the ball on the ground. They'll find someone else who can hold onto the ball. He let me know. It didn't take him to tell me that; you kind of know. If you can't hold onto the ball, somebody else will."

Chargers coach Mike McCoy declined to name Melvin Gordon the starting running back,

Pyro's take: McCoy said the Chargers discussed Gordon's fumbling issues as a group Monday. He later added that Gordon will get some carries Sunday in San Diego's first AFC West division game against the Oakland Raiders. But whether Gordon is the starter or comes off the bench remains to be seen. "We're going to move on," McCoy said. "We're going to give him the ball again. And when he's in there he's got to protect it. And he understands that." -- Eric D. Williams

Melvin Gordon rushed 15 times for 42 yards and caught 7-of-9 targets for 52 yards

Pyro's take: Melvin Gordon is still struggling to get the ball down field as his 2.8 yards per carry average dictate. He has been held under 50-yards per contest, but he also has a blocking unit that is suffering from injuries. He made owners happy by catching seven of nine passes for 52 yards. He also fumbled once.

Chargers O-Line Could be w/o 4 Starters for Week #4

oline woes

Pyro's take: Although it is a great matchup against Cleveland, Gordon might be running for his life. The Chargers have 2 of their starters on the offensive line ruled out for Week #4. Another is doubtful, and the 4th is listed as questionable. For those that speculated this could be Gordan's coming out party, the wait may continue.

Gordon to see Red Zone carries

Pyro's take: Chargers OC Frank Reich expects Melvin Gordon to see "more than his share" of red-zone work.

Danny Woodhead was the beneficiary last week due to game flow and the fact that Gordon coughed up a fumble. Woodhead allowed the Chargers feel at ease as he delivered, but San Diego feels Gordon gives them the best possibility in the long run.

Woodhead is the bet for ppr while Gordon for standard.

Melvin Gordon project 220-250 carries

Pyro's take: The San Diego Union-Tribune expects Melvin Gordon to see between 220 and 250 carries this season.

This looks like a solid projection as Gordon needs to be replaced on third downs. Danny Woodhead will be the third down specialtist while Branden Oliver will be the backup.

Gordon has a tough matchup this week against the Lions, so I would only use Melvin Gordon as a flex play.
