2009 Review

Mike Sims-Walker snuck up on people in a big way over the first part of the 2009 season… unless of course you pay attention to that completely bogus fantasy fable - The Third-Year Wide Receiver Breakout Rule.  Even then not many people knew who he was, but because his other hyphenated teammate (Maurice Jones-Drew) is one of the more popular players in the league, MSW started to get some serious attention and would up finding himself smack-dab in the middle of the fantasy map.  Those who grabbed him off the waiver wire in the middle of his streak were likely disappointed with his last bunch of games (due to various injuries catching up to him), but Mike did enough during the first half to be remembered.  He used his size to get to balls most others can’t, yet he also showed the speed necessary to make the big plays and gain separation from defenders.  All in all, MSW did well enough to keep his name on the fantasy radar for years to come.

~  Ranked 25th in the league with 126.9 WR fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Ranked 34th in the league with 57.9 receiving yards per game

~  Tied for 20th in the league with 12 receptions of 20+ yards

~  Ranked 29th in the league with 43 catches for first downs

~  Tied for 72nd in the league with 244 yards after the catch (YAC)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Sims-Walker won’t be sneaking up on anybody this year, but ugh, how in the world does he plan on getting open?  Jacksonville did absolutely nothing in the offseason to help MSW out, as the Jags are still stuck with a bunch of uninspiring #2 WRs like Troy Williamson and Mike Thomas playing opposite Sims-Walker this year.  Towards the end of 2009, defenses had figured out how to keep enough guys in the box to stop MJD while doubling up on MSW, and since nothing has changed, neither will the defensive schemes.  Mike will be coming into the season healthy, which when coupled with his skills is enough for him to put up fantasy WR2-type numbers.  That said, he’s had a hell of a time staying away from injuries during his three-year career and will continue to be a big risk to draft as a WR2 for your team.  Be plenty happy throwing him out there as your #3 receiver in 2010, as the upside is very good for as long as pieces don’t start falling off of him.

~ His upside approaches enormous as his skill level is on par with close to anybody in the league

~ His downside is devastating due to being an extreme injury liability

~ The confidence he certainly gained from what he did in 2009 should translate into numbers this year

~ How will having no legit WR2 to take the heat off him affect his ability to get open?

Contract

Sims-Walker has one year left on the four-year, $2.405 million rookie contract he signed back in July of ’07, so expect him to do everything he can this year to cement a big deal.  The contract also included $740,000 guaranteed.  Here’s the rest:

2010 - $1.101 million

2011 - Free Agent

Handcuff

Mike Thomas should be the handcuff to MSW.  If Troy Williamson has another preseason like last year, you should keep an eye on him as well

Injury Report

Green

Sky-Walker has hardly been a picture of health throughout his career, but 15 games in 2009 ain't bad, and even better when you realize that his one game missed was due to missing bed-check because he was out workin' a "lady friend"

Breaking News

Sims-Walker held out of Tuesday practice expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) was held out of practice on Tuesday.

Pyro's Take:

This was just a precaution as MSW came through last week's game just fine. He'll be a decent WR2/3 for your fantasy team this weekend as the Jags take on the Patriots.

Sims-Walker "probable" for game tonight expand +

After going through a full practice on Wednesday, Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) is being listed as probable for the game against the Colts on Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

MSW will be playing tonight, but might not be more than a WR3 for your fantasy team as the Colts don't let up many WR touchdowns. He also doesn't seem to be 100 percent quite yet, so if you start him, don't expect the WR1 numbers he used to put up earlier in the year.

Sims-Walker practices in full Tuesday expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) went through a full practice as expected on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

MSW will be ready to go this Thursday night against the Colts, but don't get your hopes up too high for him as Indy has let up the third fewest receiving TDs so far this year. He can still be played as a WR3 with upside for your fantasy team this week.

Sims-Walker expects to play in Week 15 expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker did not re-injure his calf muscle in Week 14 and expects to be just fine for the game against the Colts this Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

MSW was held in check this past weekend, but we're guessing he was playing a bit tentative due to the injury. He'll let it all hang out this Thursday against the undefeated Colts, though he may not be anymore than a WR3 with upside for your fantasy football team.

Sims-Walker ACTIVE on Sunday expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) is surprisingly active for the game against the Dolphins today and will start as usual.

Pyro's Take:

This was highly unexpected, so if you took MSW out of your lineup for a much lesser receiver, get him back in there as he has a nice matchup against the 24th ranked pass D.

Sims-Walker downgraded to doubtful expand +

The Jaguars will likely be without wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) after he missed practice on Friday. He is being listed as doubtful on the team's Week 14 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

The Jags will be severely depleted this weekend in a game that could play a big role in determining their playoff chances. We doubt MSW will play, but check back before game time on Sunday just to be sure.

Sims-Walker misses practice today expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) missed practice today after being limited in practice just a day ago.

Pyro's Take:

This is interesting news and should be followed closely over the next couple of days. The Jags take on Miami this Sunday, so if MSW is suited up, he's a high-end WR2 for your fantasy football team, so make sure you check back with us to make sure you can keep him in there.

Sims-Walker goes through limited practice expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (calf) was limited in practice on Wednesday but is expected to be back in full the rest of the week.

Pyro's Take:

Sims-Walker has slowed down lately, but you still have to start him as a WR2/3 on your fantasy football team, especially against a weak pass D like Miami's.

Sims-Walker active and ready to light it up expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) is active for the game against the Texans today.

Pyro's Take:

Sims-Walker is a fantasy stud whenever he plays at home, so feel free to start him as a high-end WR2 on your fantasy football team and possibly receive WR1 numbers.

Sims-Walker probable, but playing expand +

Even though Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) is being listed as probable for this week's match-up against the Texans, he is fully expected to make his usual start on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Get this kid in your lineup as he always seems to have a fantasy football feast when he plays at home.

Sims-Walker practices in full expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) practiced in full on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

MSW will get his normal start against the Texans and should be a nice high-end WR2 on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Sims-Walker practices, but limited expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

He's playing this week as his knee seems to be holding up just fine. He looks to be a nice WR2 on your fantasy football team as well as MSW always puts up the numbers playing at home.

Sims-Walker practices again today expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) practiced in full again on Friday and is listed as probable on the team's injury report for Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

What started off as a scare for MSW fantasy football owners turns into what should be a nice high-end WR2 play for your team this weekend. Get him in there, he's just fine.

Sims-Walker returns to practice on Thursday expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (knee) returned to full participation at practice on Thursday after sitting out yesterday.

Pyro's Take:

Missing Wednesday was never really a concern, as the Jags were just playing it cautious because MSW left the game for a brief moment last Sunday. He's fine, and can be used as at least a high-end WR2 on your fantasy football team this week

Sims-Walker holds libido in check expand +

Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker has been declared active for the game against the Rams today after surprisingly keeping his libido in check this past weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Start him on your fantasy football team if you've got him and watch him take his sexual frustration out on a Rams pass D that's given up eight passing TDs so far this season.
