Nate Burleson

Seattle Seahawks

Debbie Downer

He was involved of one of the largest scams in the last 10 years in the NFL.  Just weeks after their Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006, for reasons still yet unknown to the city and fans of the Seattle, Seahawks management (GM Tim Ruskell) did not make signing All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson a priority and instead let him go flirting with other teams in free agency.  The Minnesota Vikings, not believing in the concept of karma, quickly signed Hutch to a morally questionable (but legal at the time) “poison pill” contract making it basically impossible for the Seahawks to match.  Days later the Seahawks struck back with an identical offer to Vikings’ free agent, Nate Burleson.

Let’s break this one down quickly.  Burleson was coming off a 328-yard, 30-catch, injury-riddled season in 2005, while Hutch, at the time, was a 2-time first team All-Pro and 3-time Pro-Bowl OG.

The ‘hawks got exactly what they deserved.  Burleson has treated “Seattle’s Best” to 73 catches, 946 yards and 12 TDs… in three seasons.  Yummy.  Hutch’s three All-Pro 1st team selections on the Vikings have Ruskell feeling like William Macy in Boogie Nights:

2009 Fantasy Outlook

He’s coming off of a torn ACL but appears to be healthy again as he has had no setbacks in OTAs or camp. Either way, he  is a late round flier…at best.  In 2006, he was in the right contract situation at the right time on the right team but the guy is just over-rated.  History has proven that Hasselbeck’s 2nd receiving option is either a bad fantasy backup or the first drop off a fantasy roster in-season.  Make him the 40th WR off of draft boards this summer.

Contract

Burleson has a four-year, $14.5 million contract under his belt, with $4 million of it doled out as a signing bonus.  Here's the rest of that karma-deal:

2009 - $3.25 million

2010 - $3.25 million (voidable year)

2011 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Red

Burleson suffered a major knee injury last year, missing the entire season as a result. He rehabbed well and is back out on the practice field, but last year wasn’t the first time that Burleson had missed time due to injury, missing four games in 2005. He’s a liability.

Breaking News

Burleson inactive against the Pack expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson (ankle) has been declared inactive for the game against the Green Bay Packers today.

Pyro's Take:

If you had Burleson starting for your fantasy team, you clearly aren't in the Super Bowl. So, if you're still playing, that means you're in the toliet bowl and still need help with who to start. Well, in that case, don't start Burleson.

Burleson ruled out for Week 15 expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson (high ankle sprain) has been ruled out for the Week 15 game against the Bucs.

Pyro's Take:

That's too bad, as Burleson would have been a nice play against that D. He likely won't be back for the rest of the year, so feel free to drop him off your fantasy football team.

Burleson has high ankle sprain expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson suffered what he says is a high ankle sprain on a punt return in Sunday's game, though the X-rays did not show a fracture. He has been fitted for a plastic walking boot and says he hopes to be able to play again this year.

Pyro's Take:

There's really no reason for Nate to risk further injury to play again this year as the Seahawks are all but eliminated from playoff contention. Unless your fantasy football Super Bowl is in Week 17, you can safely drop the WR from your squad.

Burleson back to full practice on Friday expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson (back) practiced in full on Friday and is listed as probable on the team's injury report for this week.

Pyro's Take:

Burleson will play on Sunday and has a real nice match-up against a highly porous Arizona pass D. This will be a shootout folks, so get Nate into your starting fantasy lineup pronto.

Burleson limited again on Thursday expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson (back) was limited again at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Burleson is averaging 17.6 fantasy points in the two games Hasselbeck completed this season, and over his last 9 games with Hasselbeck at QB, Burleson has scored 9 TDs. This looks to be a good fantasy football weekend for him as well against a terrible Cardinal pass D.

Burleson limited in practice Wednesday expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson was limited in practice on Wednesday due to back injury.

Pyro's Take:

Burleson has been a major surprise this year, which has led to him being picked up and started regularly in most fantasy football leagues. Check back with us later in the week on his status for the upcoming game against the Cardinals.

Burleson looking good in comeback expand +

Seattle Seahawks WR Nate Burleson is not even a year removed from a torn ACL and knee reconstruction, but you wouldn't be able to tell it from the way he's moving in training camp thus far. His cuts and route running have been fluid, and he looks like he's ready to start making some of those explosive plays that the 'Hawks signed him for back in 2006.

Pyro's Take:

Seems like the same old hype-job we hear every August with this guy. Since going off for 1,006 yards for the Vikings back in 2004, his career has played a broken record both in audio and out on the field. We love to hear that a player has successfully come back from major surgery, but we just can't buy into the ballyhoo surrounding this perennial fantasy-squad drop.
