Timing a Trade

Mid-season trades are usually season-killers for a WR.  Roy knows.  Pass-catching in the NFL has as much to do with timing as it does talent level.   Timing has everything to do with one's familiarity with the playbook, as well as rapport with your QB.  Roy had neither.   Beyond that, he had an offensive coordinator who did nothing to help integrate him into the scheme.  Finally, Roy was third in the pecking order of a highly dysfunctional situation between Witten and TO (and Romo).   He got very few looks last season.  With an off-season of time to get in sync with Tony Romo and to learn the playbook, Roy should be able to return to top shelf WR status in 2009.

The Game

Roy has everything you could hope for vitals-wise. He stands at 6'3", has solid speed clocking his 40-yard dash at 4.42, and his hands are among the best in the league. His route running is very disciplined, he has the strength to break tackles, and has even shown willingness to downfield block. Roy is great as a possession receiver as he is very physical and can make plays in traffic, but also has a burst to stretch the field for the big play. In 2006 he led the league with 24 receptions of 20+ yards. Unfortunately, his toughness has to be called into question, as he has missed games in 2004, 2005, and 2007 due to various maladies (see below).

It wouldn't hurt his cause if he could grow a pair of balls and play through some of his little pinner injuries that tend to come up every season. Winning tends to help with that and he hasn't experienced much of that in his career. All told, Roy is still quite young at 27 with minimal mileage, and Dallas has the talent around him to deflect defenses attention. We smell a breakout.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

There are three key reasons that support Roy returning to fantasy glory in 2009.

1) WR1 - He will be Romo's primary target this season. He and Witten should co-exist peacefully as TO is the only human alive capable of the accusations he made last year, and Romo will have no problem spreading the love to a 6'3" speedy possession receiver with soft hands.

2) Texas Pride - Williams is a Permian Panther alum (Friday Night Lights), and while that didn't do a lot for his cause last season, he has been working diligently this off-season in Dallas, the coaches are impressed with his work ethic, and he wants to prove his worth to his hometown.

3) Offensive Scheme - In what was largely dubbed an "off" year for the Dallas offense, they still ranked 4th in passing TDs (29), 8th in passing attempts (547), and 9th in passing yards (3,789). They love to air it out.

Injury is the only thing holding Roy back. He may experience some shock playing for a team that will win more than three games in a season, but that may also motivate him to play through some pain. Should Romo go down this year, Dallas went out and traded for Jon Kitna to back him up. Kitna and Williams have solid rapport from their days losing games (but producing copious fantasy points) in Detroit, and we feel Kitna would fare better behind the Dallas line than ever in Detroit or even Cincinnati. Few WRs have the QB stability that the Cowboy pass catchers have this season. Make Roy E. Williams the 63rd WR off of draft boards this summer.

Handcuff

Miles Austin - Miles should come cheap and would become a valuable handcuff to Roy Williams if he misses time.  Depending on how many rounds your draft is, there is also Patrick Crayton on the depth to consider - although he doesn't have much upside.  This offense will pass and pass often, so handcuffing at least Austin in the very deep rounds of your draft is advised.

Injury Report

Yellow

Roy is usually good to miss a game or two each season. He has played all 16 only once. Injuries and the grit to effectively play thru them are a concern, here. Here is a brief run-down. Nothing career-threatening, but they are persistent nonetheless.

• 2004 -- Sprained ankle
• 2005 -- Quadriceps strain
• 2007 -- Damaged knee ligament (placed on IR)
• 2008 - had two bye-weeks because of the mid-season trade - did not miss games but it was reported by the team that he was dealing with plantars fasciitis.

Breaking News

Roy and Romo still not on the same page expand +

Despite connecting for a 7-yard touchdown on Sunday, Cowboys QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams are still off in terms of their connection.
"I don't know what it is," Williams said. "We worked early in the off-season, came in a month before everybody, throwing every day. He throws to me every day, and it's just not there right now."

Pyro's Take:

Williams had seven targets in the game, but only came away with two catches for 19 yards. Williams is hardly playable on your fantasy football team right now and might be considered the biggest bust in the game at this point.

Roy just a little bit rusty on Sunday expand +

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said today that wide receiver Roy Williams did not aggravate his previous rib injury and that his poor performance was simply due to rust from not playing since October 4th.

Pyro's Take:

Rust or not, Roy is looking awful and pretty much has all year. He'll keep his starting job, but expect the targets to continue to dwindle with the emergence of Miles Austin. Sit him on your fantasy football bench for awhile.

Roy Williams says he's 100% healthy expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams said on Thursday that his ribs are fine and he's back to being 100% healthy.

Pyro's Take:

He also said it has taken time for Romo to adjust to him and vice versa. Romo returned by saying the best is yet to come for Williams. We'll see, but so far, Williams has been a fantasy football bust.

Roy Williams back at practice in full expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams (ribs) was back with the team and practicing in full on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Roy has been less than stellar this year, but whether that's because of him or Tony Romo is up in the air. He can be played as a WR3 on your fantasy football team this weekend, but don't expect the world as the big man might be a bit rusty.

Roy Williams returns to practice expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams (ribs) returned to practice on Monday after using the bye week to heal his injured ribs.

Pyro's Take:

Roy will be ready to go in Week 7, and just might be a bit antsy to put a hurtin' on someone. Feel free to throw him in as a WR3 on your fantasy football team next weekend against a so-so Atlanta pass D.

Cowboys' Roy Williams says he'll be ready after week 6 bye expand +

According to a quote from the faux-star WR in the Dallas Morning News.

Pyro's Take:

We know his problem is not Romo. He is an injury prone little girl. His owners should pick up Austin and hope for more injury to Williams.

Roy not with team on the plane to Kansas City expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams was not on the plane to Kansas City with the team on Saturday.

Pyro's Take:

Basically, Roy ain't playing on Sunday. If you have another receiver to replace him, do it now. Otherwise, pick up one of those other jamokes who pretend to catch passes for Dallas.

Roy Williams doubtful to play on Sunday expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams (ribs) missed practice again on Friday and is being listed as doubtful for Sunday's match-up against the Chiefs.

Pyro's Take:

When asked, coach Wade Phillips said, "Right now I'd say no but that could change today or tomorrow." It doesn't look good for Roy, so if you have another option on your fantasy football bench, we'd suggest using it.

Roy misses second practice this week expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams (ribs) missed a second consecutive day of practice on Thursday, but still says he looks forward to playing against the Chiefs on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Williams is a tough guy, so we're guessing that he could play on Sunday if the coaches let him. He'd likely be on a snap-count if they do, so if you have other options available, we'd sit him on your fantasy football bench if you can.

Roy Williams has cartilage damage in three ribs expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams ended up with cartilage damage to three of his ribs when he was crushed by LB D.J. Williams while going up for an errant pass by QB Tony Romo.

Pyro's Take:

Romo should get a nice Christmas present this year from Roy in the form of a good old fashioned ass-whooping. Romo continues to slide down fantasy football depth charts and is taking Roy down with him.

Romo hangs Roy Williams out to dry expand +

Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams went up for an overthrown ball by QB Tony Romo that nearly got him split in two. "Never in my life have I been hit like that, from Pop Warner through my six years in the league," Roy Williams said. "I'm 5,280 feet above sea level with asthma, so I was obviously hurting."

Pyro's Take:

Not only do fans and Cowboys legends want to kick his ass, but now it seems his own teammates want him taken behind the shed as well. With Romo playing as bad as he is, Roy is no more than low-end WR3 on your fantasy football team at this point.

Roy Williams returns to practice on Tuesday expand +

"Roy Williams is back," coach Wade Phillips said after practice. "Looked pretty good, moved around well. It looked like he was a little bit sore, you could tell, a little bit on his shoulder. But he didn't seem to have any problems."

Pyro's Take:

Williams was also seen putting on an impressive display of arm strength and accuracy while throwing passes and goofing around during the Cowboys warmups. So much for the original speculation that he'd be out 6-8 weeks. Continue slotting Roy E. as a WR2 in your fantasy drafts the next couple weeks.

Roy Williams big scare turns out to be big bruise expand +

Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams, who injured his collarbone at practice on Thursday, is now being listed as day-to-day after original reports had him out 6-8 weeks with a broken collarbone. The X-rays came back negative and the Cowboys are now calling the injury a "shoulder contusion".

Pyro's Take:

We're blaming Jerry Jones for this one. Everything around this guy seems to be overblown or made too big (nice scoreboard buddy!). Though Roy is being listed as day-to-day now, we're betting they keep their top WR out of the lineup for the final two preseason games and let him rest up for Week 1. In light of the readjusted news, we will be keeping Williams right where he should be as a top-tier fantasy WR2.

Cowboys' WR Roy Williams x-rays are negative, and an MRI is to follow expand +

Roy Williams will miss the rest of the preseason with an injury to his collarbone. X-rays did not reveal any broken bones, and he will have an MRI on the shoulder on Friday.

Pyro's Take:

We are going to be bumping him down based on this news. He has a history of injury and has not shown us much. We are going to be eating a little crow on this one, too, because we originally had high hopes for Roy.

Roy E is back at practice catching balls from Romo expand +

Wrist taped, and wearing Patrick Crayton's #84 for some odd reason.

Pyro's Take:

Good news. We disagree with many that think Roy doesn't have it. He is injury prone, sure, but when healthy, and a QB like Romo, he can be elite.
