Ryan Grant

Green Bay Packers

Next Time Stay Home

Nightclubs and NFL football players do not mix well.   With Grant, it wasn't him getting into a brawl or anything nutty like that.  It was infinitely more pathetic.  He was accidentally bumped and he lost balance and his hand went sailing through a flight of champagne glasses.  And you thought the cork was all you had to worry about.

The severed artery he suffered threatened to end a career that barely had moved up until that point.  He wasn't drafted coming out of Notre Dame in '05, but had signed on with the Giants as an undrafted free agent.  The champagne flight injury kept him out of the '06 season completely, but he recovered and was eventually traded to the Packers for a future 6th round draft pick.  What a bargain.

2007-2008

Almost all of the stats Grant racked up in '07 came in 10 games after Brandon Jackson (who was supposed to be Green Bay's future star RB) and DeShawn Wynn went down with injury.   Grant benefited greatly from what would become Favre's Green Bay swan song season racking up over 900 yards and eight TDs in the final 10 games of the season.   We were all duped into grabbing this guy high in '08 drafts as a result.   He rewarded fantasy suckers with six quick shots to the eye aka goose eggs.   He snapped out of his funk by week seven with an impressive line against Indy.  Over the final eight games he managed 761 total yards and scored four of his five TDs in the final eight games of the season.   Much was made of Grant's disappointing '08 YPC average having dipped from 5.1 to 3.9.  He averaged 4.9 YPC in the final eight games of the season.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Green Bay has struggled to punch the ball in over the last seven years:

greenbay packers rush td

Not since Ahman Green's peak year in 2003 has Green Bay enjoyed top rushing TD production.  Ahman would never be the same after that year, and the Pack has struggled to find a dependable RB since. They ranked 24th with 11 TDs rushing in '08.   We really don't have a great idea of what Grant can do with a solid off-season in all OTAs and training camp as the starter.  He stepped in mid-year in '07 after injuries to the two guys that now back him up (Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn), and then held out much of the last off-season due to the Packers offending him with a contract extension that was not reflective of a NFL starting RB role.   He arrived to camp mid-way through and strained a hamstring that stuck around for much of the first half of the season.

With his contract situation being placated by a four year $20 million contract he signed in the first week of August, '08, Grant has been working out vigorously and should be much more prepared entering '09.  If you were to amortize his second half numbers from last season you are looking at 1642 total yards and eight total TDs.  With another 300+ touches, Grant should double his TD production from '08.  Make him the 8th RB off of draft boards this summer.

Contract

Ryan signed a four-year, $20 million contract before the 2008 season began.  The deal included initial roster bonuses totaling $4 million, while another $10 million is available through incentives.  Annual workout bonuses of $250,000 are available beginning in 2009.  If he rushes for 1,000 yards, he gets $500,000 added to his base pay the subsequent year.  If Grant rushes for 1,250 yards, he earns an additional $1.5 million.  If he rushes for 1,500+ yards, he earns $2.5 million more.  The rest of the deal is below:

2009 - $750,000 (+ $2.75 million roster bonus in March + $500,000 roster bonus)

2010 - $3 million (+ $1.25 million roster bonus in March + $500,000 roster bonus)

2011 - $3.5 million (+ $1.75 million roster bonus in March + $500,000 roster bonus)

2012 - Free Agent

Grant is plenty incented to continue to build off his solid rookie year and strong second half of his sophomore year.

Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn - They are both draft worthy.  If you end up with Grant, we'd target Brandon Jackson in the early teen rounds and the Wynn with a last round flier assuming you have room on your roster for another RB.

Breaking News

Ryan Grant limited again on Friday expand +

Packers running back Ryan Grant (shoulder) was limited at practice again on Friday.

Pyro's Take:

The Pack doesn't play until Monday night, so they're likely just giving their workhorse a little extra rest. Grant, however, is merely a weak RB2 for your fantasy football team this weekend as he goes up against a strong Ravens rush D.

Ryan Grant returns to a limited practice expand +

Packers running back Ryan Grant (shoulder) returned to practice in a limited fashion on Thursday and is expected to make his normal start on Monday Night Football.

Pyro's Take:

We fully expect Grant to play, but he doesn't figure to be the greatest RB2 play for your fantasy football team this weekend against a tough Ravens rush D.

Ryan Grant sits out Tuesday's practice expand +

Packers running back Ryan Grant sat out today with an undisclosed injury, but did observe the practice from the sidelines.

Pyro's Take:

There's no reason to believe that anything is seriously wrong with Grant, as the coaches probably felt that the RB just needed a little extra rest to keep him fresh for the remainder of the season. Ryan faces a tough Ravens D on Monday night and should only be used as a low-end RB2 on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Grant practices in full on Tuesday expand +

Packers running back Ryan Grant (stinger) practiced in full on Tuesday and is expected to start on Thanksgiving against the Lions.

Pyro's Take:

Grant will most definitely start on Thursday and is a high-end RB2 play for your fantasy football team against a pitiful Lions defense that just gave up 37 points to the Browns last week.

Grant suffers stinger on final drive of game expand +

Packers running back Ryan Grant suffered a stinger on the final drive of the game on Sunday, but coach Mike McCarthy said that the injury wasn't serious.

Pyro's Take:

Grant has really been picking up the pace lately averaging 101.3 yards/game on 5.0 yards/carry to go along with 2 TDs over the past three games. However, besides Detroit over Thanksgiving, his schedule isn't conducive to this type of continued productivity, so temper your fantasy football expectations a bit going forward.

Grant has a new backup, possible competition expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson has been passed up on the depth chart by recently signed RB Ahman Green. Ahman will take over the duties as the third-down back previously held by Jackson.

Pyro's Take:

There was never anything particularly special about Brandon, so this news comes as no shock to us. Ahman is said to be in incredible shape, and since Ryan Grant is a terrible third-down back, Green might be worth an insurance pickup for your fantasy football team.

Grant proclaims hamstring to be A-Ok expand +

Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant let it be known that the hamstring strain that lingered throughout 2008 and hampered his overall performance has been a non-issue this year. “He’s had a tremendous off-season workout program,” said Edgar Bennett, the Packers’ running backs coach. “He’s strong, he’s healthy. He’s off to a good start.”

Pyro's Take:

Grant carried Green Bay through the final 10 games of 2007, which is the Ryan Grant the Packers are hoping for this year. Grant's numbers went down across the board last season due to the hamstring injury he incurred during preseason, but he looks to be in great shape during camp and could be primed for another year like 2007.

Packers' RB Grant healthy, solid and explosive expand +

Green Bay Packers' RB Ryan Grant has been focusing on his explosiveness this offseason as he tries to regain his 2007 form.

Pyro's Take:

Grant's struggles last year were well documented, as he went from 5.1 YPC in 2007 to 3.9 last year. However, coach Mike McCarthy pointed out that this is the first year Grant has had a full training camp with the Packers, and that can only help him as he tries to regain his form.

Packers want to run more expand +

Green Bay Packers OC Joe Philbin said he wants to run "32-34 times a game...we need to get it up in the 30s on a consistent basis."

Pyro's Take:

The Packers ran the ball 43% of the time last year, and we honestly don't expect them to move from their pass-first mentality. They got stars at WR and QB. So, while Grant will see more carries, don't expect his production to increase dramatically.
