Ryan Moats

Houston Texans

The Arrogance of a Cop

Ryan Moats has never made headlines because of his play on the football field, slicing and dicing between defenders like Harrison Ford.  Moats leaves that job to Steve Slaton.  But in March of 2009, Moats became the 387.5th NFL player (can you really count Dante Stallworth a football player?) to be confronted by a police officer in the last year (or so it seemed).  However, this time it was different.  This time, the cop was in the wrong.

Moats, his wife, and a few family friends were at his home when they got word that his mother-in-law was rapidly dying from breast cancer, so they did was all normal families do in this situation; they rushed to the hospital as quickly and safely as possible to be by her side.  Moats drove and had his hazard lights on, and he decided that a red light wasn't going to stop his wife from seeing her mother one last time.  So he ran it (slowly, as the video shows) and a cop pulled him over and threatened to "screw him over" as Moats was pleading with him to let him go see his dying mother-in-law.  Moats' wife raced into the hospital (after the officer pointed his gun at her and told her to get back into the car) and the cop delayed Moats by more than 13 minutes, but by the end, it was too late.

It's a very unfortunate incident, and Moats actually did something that a lot of NFL players haven't done in this situation- he acted with class.  He was clearly distressed and upset that the hick cop was not understanding, but he didn't walk away, or push him, or anything of the sort.  He never mentioned he was an NFL Player to try to get out of the situation, he didn't try to make an example of the cop by bringing this story to the public eye (it was first reported by an ABC affiliate), and he accepted the now resigned officer's apology.  A lot of players can learn from this situation, and it's amazing Moats kept his cool regarding the circumstances.  Here's a video of his interview on Good Morning America that includes footage of the incident:

His Game

Well, if it weren't for his very upsetting run-in with the cops in March, this page would be shorter than Travis Henry's list of states in which he hasn't impregnated a woman.  Moats is a rarely used back, who had 55 carries for 278 yards and three TDs his rookie year with the Eagles.  Sadly, those all remain career highs.  He missed all of the 2007 season with a broken ankle, and last year with Houston, his first with the team, he got just 26 carries for 94 yards and one TD due to the emergence of rookie sensation Steve Slaton.  He's not a big back, but he plays like one.  He runs downhill and is a good compliment to the speedy and agile Slaton.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Moats is not a viable fantasy option in 2009.  He is currently battling the injury prone Chris Brown (who had one good year for the Titans but has missed 11 games in two of the last three seasons) for the backup spot to Slaton, and if he wins it, he still won't see much action.  The Texans don't want to overuse Slaton this early in his career, so they are hoping to get 8-12 carries per game for the backup.  Both Brown and Moats figure to factor into the mix, but obviously not with enough attempts (Slaton injury withstanding).  Leave him on the waiver wire for now.  Myriad injuries would make him a pickup behind this 10th ranked offensive line.

Injury Report

Green

Ryan missed the entire 2007 season with a broken ankle he suffered in training camp, but he’s been healthy since then and there’s no reason to think he’s injury-prone.

Moats fumbles again, replaced by Arian Foster expand +

When Texans running back Ryan Moats fumbled the ball away in the second half of Sunday's game, coach Gary Kubiak took him out of the game for good and replaced him with rookie RB Arian Foster.
“We’re impressed with what Foster did... so I think we just get him involved more, give him an opportunity,” Kubiak said on Monday.

Pyro's Take:

With the Texans going with three RBs the rest of the way, it's tough to say that any one is more enticing than the other. However, with Chris Brown being slow as a slug and Ryan Moats being undersized and having trouble with ball-control, Arian Foster might be a decent one-week pickup for your fantasy playoffs as the Texans take on the St. Louis Rams indoors next weekend.

Kubiak confirms all three RBs will be used expand +

When asked by the media on Wednesday about his plan with the running back situation, Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed that yes, he'll "...work them all. They know they're all going to play."

Pyro's Take:

Sure, he'll use them all... until he realizes that his mother could have run for 100 yards against the Bills and that the reason Moats has been a backup to Slaton is because Slaton gives you a better chance to win, fumbles or no fumbles.
Watch closely this Sunday however to see how this plays out for your fantasy football team.

Has Moats earned the starting job? expand +

When Texans running back Steve Slaton lost his fifth fumble of the season in the first quarter yesterday, that was all coach Gary Kubiak needed to see to pull him in favor of RB Ryan Moats. In the post-game press conference, however, Kubiak implied that Slaton will still be involved in the offense next week: "I told Steve in the locker room to get his chin up. This team needs him playing well and making plays and I'm expecting him to come right back next week and help us," said Kubiak.

Pyro's Take:

The team DOES need Slaton, because even though Moats did the trick this past Sunday, he doesn't have near the skills Slaton does and is too small to carry a full load every week anyway. Slaton's fantasy football value took a hit, but not so much that he can't still be used.
