Sidney Rice

Minnesota Vikings

2009 Review

sidney rice is loved by brett favre

What a difference a year makes… and a surefire Hall-of-Fame quarterback doesn’t hurt either we guess.  You can’t take away the difference Brett Favre made on the Vikings in 2009, but Sidney Rice was set out to make his own differences well before Favre signed on with the team.  Rice worked hard with Minnesota’s own 8-time Pro Bowler, WR Cris Carter, and current NFL star Larry Fitzgerald in the off-season leading up to 2009, and his efforts look to have paid huge dividends for this up-and-coming stud.  The leap he made from the 2008 season to this past year was (maybe) only surpassed by Cowboys WR Miles Austin, but the surprise was not nearly as great.  Sidney has always had the skills to be amongst the elite receivers in the game, and that’s exactly where his 2009 numbers landed him.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Sidney Rice has the talent to be among the top fantasy guys in the league, but sometimes talent alone doesn’t quite do the trick.  A lot will depend on which guy will be steering the Vikings ship in 2010.  If Brett Favre comes back to play, which is about as sure a thing (for either sex) as Lindsay Lohan on a coke-binge, Rice should have no problem putting up the same type of numbers he put up in 2009.  However, if the starting QB ends up being either Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels, all bets are off, and Sidney could be looking at low-end WR2/high-end WR3 numbers by the end of the year.  We’re betting on the former.

~ To Favre or not to Favre, that is the question

~ AP might be leaned on more heavily this year with Chester Taylor leaving for Chicago

~ Was Sidney’s breakout merely a fluke, or does he have what it takes to stay among the elite?

Injury Report

Green

He played in all 16 games last season. The knee injury 2 years ago is not a concern.

Breaking News

Pro Bowl: Sidney Rice too sore, Roddy White in expand +

Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice said that he was too sore after the game against the Saints last weekend to play in the Pro Bowl game this Sunday. Falcons WR Roddy White will take his place on the NFC roster.

Pyro's Take:

Roddy has been a beast the last three seasons, putting up 80+ receptions and 1,150+ yards in each. He also set his own career best in touchdowns this year with 11 and will be making his second straight Pro Bowl game appearance in Miami.

Sidney Rice questionable with the flu expand +

Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice (flu) missed practice on Friday and is being listed as questionable on the team's Week 15 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

It's unusual for the flu to keep a player out of a game, but with it being so close to game day, you never know. Check back over the next couple of days as we're sure you'd like to know as soon as possible what the star receiver's status is for your fantasy football team.

Sidney Rice starting to emerge expand +

Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice, who was expected to break-out last season, is finally starting to emerge as the guy the team thought he was. "I do work hard," Rice said, "but you have to push yourself to that next level, you got to outdo your opponent."

Pyro's Take:

Rice worked out with Larry Fitzgerald and former Vikings star Cris Carter in the off-season, and the work seems to have paid off. Feel free to use Sidney as a WR3 or flex play on your fantasy football team.

Vikings' WR Sidney Rice is listed as starter for first pre-season game expand +

Sidney Rice's game has progressed noticeably since last summer, and has thus far, been able to hold off rookie Percy Harvin for the starting WR2 aka flanker spot.

Pyro's Take:

Harvin will be on the field no matter what, but its a great sign of Rice's progress. We had this kid ranked higher than we probably should have before Favre's recent lube job, but had to clip him down a bunch with either The human helicopter or Tarvaris Jackson throwing to him.

3rd year Rice getting tips from the best expand +

Vikings WR Sidney Rice has been looking to make a name for himself in the league for two years now, and finally found a way to do it. In between the OTAs in June and the start of training camp in August, Rice worked out with Vikings legend Cris Carter and current all-world WR Larry Fitzgerald. In doing so, Sidney found out exactly what he needs to be doing in order to get to the next level. "I catch at least 50 passes (before practice)," Rice said. "That's one thing I learned from Larry and Cris. You've always got to do the little things. You've got to keep doing extra, because there's always someone out there working harder or just as hard."

Pyro's Take:

Rice has the talent to not only be a starter in the NFL, but be amongst the elite pass-catchers in the league. If he listened closely enough to Carter and Fitz and does all the little things they clued him in on, we have no doubt that Sid the Kid will be getting the attention he deserves sooner than later. When Fitzgerald says that Rice should be a "big-time starter", and even claim that Rice is "much more athletic than me", we can't help but take Larry at his word. Keep an eye out for this 6'4" beast this year.
