Injury Report

Yellow

Slaton was a dependable back through college and his 1st year in the pros, but 2009 saw him go down with a neck injury that needed surgery to fix. Never a good sign with an RB, so we'd be extremely cautious with this guy

Breaking News

Texans put Steve Slaton on injured reserve expand +

The Houston Texans decided today to place running back Steve Slaton on injured reserve, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.

Pyro's Take:

The doctors said that Slaton has a nerve issue in his neck and that the injury should heal on its own, but will take at least 4-6 weeks to do so. It was also stated that the issue was in no way career threatening.
You can safely drop Slaton from your fantasy football teams now.

Slaton has experienced numbness for a month expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton has been experiencing numbness in his shoulder for the past month, but normally it would dissipate and allow him to play in the games. However, at this point, the team feels he should see a spine specialist to determine the problem as the numbness traveled down into his thumb and wouldn't go away this past week. According to coach Gary Kubiak, Slaton will "be reevaluated and will be day to day” depending on what the doctor says.

Pyro's Take:

This doesn't look good for the young running back, but we'll reserve judgment until we hear what the doctors have to say. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for the time being.

Slaton to see specialist tomorrow expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton (neck, shoulder) will visit a specialist in Dallas tomorrow to get a second opinion on his injury.

Pyro's Take:

Depending on what the doctor says, Slaton will be re-evaluated and is considered day-to-day. The Texans insist his injury isn't serious, but we'll see what the story is later in the week. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for now.

Slaton inactive as expected expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton (neck) is inactive for the game against the Jaguars today. Chris Brown will be getting the start in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Jacksonville has a pretty good rush D, so Chris Brown might not be the greatest replacement for Slaton in your fantasy football lineup. Hopefully you have someone else to plug in there today.

Slaton not expected to play on Sunday expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton (shoulder, neck) is not expected to be active on Sunday against the Jaguars. Chris Brown has already been named the starter by coach Gary Kubiak.

Pyro's Take:

Slaton reportedly has numbness in his arms and though he is said to be a game-time decision, don't expect him to play this weekend. Get him out of your fantasy football lineup now.

Slaton limited again on Thursday expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton (neck) was limited again in practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Slaton should be able to go this Sunday as he was limited in the same way last week and played. He's getting back to RB2 status, so don't be afraid to use him on your fantasy football team this week.

Slaton limited in practice yesterday expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton went through limited participation at practice yesterday due to a sore neck.

Pyro's Take:

Slaton should be fine as he was limited in the same way last week, then went out to reestablish himself as a viable RB2 on your fantasy football team during the game. He's got a nice match-up, so don't be afraid to use him.

Slaton finally taking care of the ball expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton has now gone three straight games without a fumble after fumbling seven times (losing five) over the first eight games.

Pyro's Take:

Slaton is starting to regain a bit of the fantasy football value he lost from the first half of the season. Despite being benched after one carry in Week 8 and not starting the following game, Slaton is still fourth in the league in RB receptions, leads the NFL in receiving TDs for a RB, and has seven touchdowns overall. Not too shabby for a down year.

Slaton to start on Sunday expand +

Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed on Friday that he plans on starting running back Steve Slaton this Sunday against the Colts.

Pyro's Take:

Looks like Slaton's injury is just fine. The question is, how many touches will the shifty little guy get this week? He's still splitting carries with Chris Brown, so even though he's starting, he's likely no more than a low-end RB2 or flex play on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Slaton returns to practice Thursday expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton (shoulder) returned to a limited practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Slaton should be just fine and will play on Sunday. However, it looks like coach Gary Kubiak might run Chris Brown a bunch again, so Slaton should probably only be used at the flex position on your fantasy football team this week.

Slaton misses Wednesday practice expand +

Texans running back Steve Slaton missed practice on Wednesday with a shoulder injury. The extent of the injury is not known at this time.

Pyro's Take:

We expect Slaton to be able to go this weekend, but he might not be the best fantasy football option despite playing better last week. His split carries and banged up shoulder aren't too big of a concern, but the match-up against Indy isn't quite in his favor.

Slaton to start this Sunday expand +

According to the Houston Chronicle, Steve Slaton had a great week of practice and has been named the starter for Monday night's game vs. the Titans.

Pyro's Take:

Phew. Time for this cat to start paying his owners back. Before he put his eighth pill on the turf a few weeks back, he was in the top ten fantasy RBs (basic format) with all of the receiving yards/scores he was putting up. He's been weak in-between the tackles, and I don't expect that to change, but he now must be considered a solid start.

Slaton following Tiki Barber's path expand +

After fumbling the ball eight times (losing five) in the first half of the season, Texans running back Steve Slaton decided to grab former RB Tiki Barber's tape in order to figure out what he's doing wrong. "Tiki had a real big (fumbling) problem just like myself. He got his fixed, so why can't I get mine fixed?" said Slaton.

Pyro's Take:

Said coach Gary Kubiak about Slaton on Tuesday: "He's giving us everything he has he just needs to clean up hanging onto the ball... For us to play well in the next seven weeks, Steve will have to be a big part of that. I know I'm counting on him, and I know his teammates are, too."
Slaton will have that starting job back in no time, so keep him handy to be plugged back into your fantasy football lineup sometime in the near future.

Slaton to get even MORE competition? expand +

When asked about released running back Larry Johnson today, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said, "We'll go back and take a look at him just like any other player."

Pyro's Take:

Oh give us a break. We understand being concerned about fumbles, as Ryan Moats just lost one on the goal-line this past week as well, but Larry Johnson?!?! Come on Kub, just work on it with Slaton and let him get going again. LJ is NOT the answer to your problems.
Steve Slaton still holds the most fantasy football value in the Texans backfield, so don't go doing anything drastic.

Kubiak confirms all three RBs will be used expand +

When asked by the media on Wednesday about his plan with the running back situation, Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed that yes, he'll "...work them all. They know they're all going to play."

Pyro's Take:

Sure, he'll use them all... until he realizes that his mother could have run for 100 yards against the Bills and that the reason Moats has been a backup to Slaton is because Slaton gives you a better chance to win, fumbles or no fumbles.
Watch closely this Sunday however to see how this plays out for your fantasy football team.
